Going to meet a banjo player tomorrow |
Lead | |
|
As you all may know, my guitar teacher hosts a local bluegrass radio show..... http://www.redbarnradio.com/main.html
Anyway, I was talking to him today and he was telling me that tomorrow he's bringing this woman who happens to be his favorite banjo player to school tomorrow. She's going to be on the show tomorrow night, but he's gonna bring her to school so she can enrich the young children with banjo music. So even though he's not taking her to the high school he told me that I just have to meet her. He's going to actually get me out of a class to do it which I find hilarious, "excuse me, I need to leave now, I'm going to hang out with a banjo player...." ![]() It should be a lot of fun though. He's talked about her before and I've seen some videos. She is REALLY good.

Neat. Women play banjo?
![]() I wish I had an excuse like that for work. It can get tougher after High School. Do you play banjo? |

^ Naw, I don't play but I've thought about it. Maybe I can seek her input on the subject tomorrow. Yeah, the teacher of the class is gonna be pissed, he told me he "doesn't like music." He also happens to be my advisor. And it's kind of amusing because guitar-teacher man was my advisor for middle school and he's the exact opposite. Competition between the advisors.
I'm looking forward to it. Watch me get a detention because of it or something.

This could be a real good ABC after-school special. 'A Chance Meeting of Differing Advisors.'

Sounds like fun to me......even if it is just Banjo (kidding).
Imagine getting out early to meet Tommy Emmanuelle. It was always fun getting to leave school early when I played sports and the team we were playing was way out of town requiring............leaving early. Have fun! |

So Ryan-- sorry Maggie I know this is your thread which is devoted to banjo plucking people and mentors and mentees and manatees and absentees who all play banjo or tennis or may play stringed instruments along with soon to be quarreling advisers of all persuasions including possibly Dave Cowles hey why is advisor spelled with an 'o' and advisers with well an 'e' who really knows but advisers from your school who quarrel about banjos but anyway sorry I don't mean to take over your private space cuz this is your space you know and I wouldn't want to step on any toes now at least toe and toes works out to make sense so-- Ryan pray tell what sports did you actually participate in in sorry that's a double 'in' High School besides say debate team and Math Club huh?

^ LOL!!!! I read that word for word.
It was great today. I really enjoyed it. She was very calm and relax and just went out there and played an amazing show. She's just great. And she actually talked about how she was playing each song. She showed us about 5 different techniques and it was really cool. Then I met her and we chatted for a bit. It was really an enjoyable experience. My teacher got up there and jammed with her and it was very entertaining.

As long as you don't harbor any thoughts of taking up banjo yourself...
Here we go: Q. What's the difference between a banjo and a trampoline? A. You take off your shoes to jump on a trampoline.
You forget it and I'll forget it, but I'll remember it, and don't you forget it!

Awwwww- it was going so well up to that point.
Let's not quash the dreams of the young burgeoning banjoers! ![]() Two ways to play the banjo better: Play the banjo underwater. Visualize playing the banjo...and that's it. Name three current banjo players, one comedian, and one Czech. curler: ...?......?......?, Steve Martin, Martin Snitil. Okay, sorry, I'm done.

We did actually tell some banjo jokes today. And We watched a video of Steve Martin playing banjo. Got all the bases covered. I forgot to mention that she and my guitar teacher have reached the conclusion that I should take up busking. That's just what I wanted to here from my teacher, "yeah, you should go play music on a street corner..." I told him he gets to post bail when I get arrested.

I live in Madison, Wi.- home to quite a few cute puppies- and there is a street by the university with shops and such where people busk during the warmer months. Some acoustics, more violins than anything. It adds to a great atmosphere, especially at night.
Lynn, any pictures from your busker-days? We would all like to see... ![]() I'll let Maggie chime in on this... |

Yeah, I would love to do some busking stuff. I actually don't know what Kentucky laws are on this subject..... But hopefully I'll find out.

I would seriously just love to go and do that. It would be great. If not for the money just to play in front of people.

After careful consideration (and listening to 'Little Lion Man' about 100 times) I have decided that banjos may, after all, deserve a place in this world. As long as they're not too close to me.

well they finally got the pictures up on the site. Here's my teacher (on guitar), his daughter (on fiddle) and Lydia (on banjo) on the radio show. His daughter is an insane fiddle player. She's an incredible musician in general. She will go far. Very far.
