I have an early 70's model Gibson Dove with some brush strokes showing in the finish, and have been offered a trade for these two guitars. What do you think? Both look really good in pics.

Welcome to UBGF, turfguy. If the Dove is in otherwise good shape, I'd have trouble letting it go. I can only speak for myself, but it's not a trade I'd want to make, just based on what you've said.

Although the Norlin era Gibsons aren't highly sought after, there were some good ones. They were overbuilt and had the tone-killing adjust-o-matic bridge on them to boot. The person who is offering you that trade probably knows very well that over the long haul he'll be coming out on the winning side financially. However, if you don't play the Dove much, and like the RK and the 143, why not?
Currently the Dove might bring $1100. The RD227 around $400 used, and about the same for the BR143. Dave

I don't ever play it, but I have never played a Recording King or a Blueridge 143. I kind of had my heart set on an HD 28, but I don't think the Dove will bring in that much cash on a straight sell anyway. Decisions, decisions.

Will you have an opportunity to play and inspect these two guitars before you commit to a trade?

If you don't play the Dove, I think I would sell it, put the money away, and add to it till I could find used what I really had set my heart on.

Yes I will be able to inspect and play. Also to answer the other comment, with three children, it is not so easy to just put money away and add to it. Something always seems to come up. Basically, the guitar is all I have to play with if that makes sense.

I'd go look at the other guitars and give them a chance. You might like the way one or the other sounds and end up playing it and enjoying it. You might consider asking the other guy for a little boot to sweeten the deal. Sounds like he might be pretty interested in it.

turfguy wrote: More info to consider, I see. I understand about the three children. I worked two part time jobs while doing master and PhD work in seminary with three teenage daughters and my wife home schooled them, so I understand the financial end.. With that in mind and you have only one guitar to play, here is my advice, and it's worth what you're paying for it : sell the Dove, buy another guitar, and have the balance on hand for that inevitable something that's going to break down or something a child needs or whatever.I may be very wrong--I have been on many occasions--but the other guy seems to be coming out ahead here. Again, just my opinion, but I feel a special kinship with a fella who has three children and not a whole lot of extra money lying around. ![]() Bill

Two very different necks on those babies. I have a Recording King ROC57CFE with a 1 3/4" nut and a Blueridge BR343 with a 1 11/16" nut. Once I got used to the 1 3/4" nut, I hardly use my 343 anymore. I do a lot of finger style guitar, so the larger nut suits me just fine.

I have owned a RD-227 and I still have a BR-63.
While both are nice guitars they won't be worth the same as the Gibson. I agree with others that advise to sell the Gibson outright and buy a used Martin. You may not have to add very much to get the Martin. |
