RD-27 issue |

I just bought a new Recording King RD-27 from Online Guitars on Ebay. The serial # is 0010319. The guitar is very heavy. The sound is very tinny and all
mid-range. I put new Daddario strings on it with no improvement. It has no bass sound on the low end at all. Any suggestions anyone. I am a new member here and
this is my first post.

Welcome, Harry. Most of the RD27s I've heard or played sounded pretty doggone good. What kind of return policy was involved in the ebay purchase? Did you
buy it from an online dealer/store, or an individual? Arranging a return, including paying for return shipping, is probably what I'd try first. Sometimes
you just get a dud, since all guitars, even of the same make and model, are not created equal. This is another testimonial for being able to play before you
pay, but clearly that isn't always possible.

Bought it from a dealer, Online Guitars in Kentucky. Unfortunately they have a no return policy.

If that's the case, either you got a genuine clunker or there's something ( poorly seated saddle, etc.) that could be easily remedied by a competent
guitar tech. I'd have it looked over by such a person, and if it checks out ok and still sounds crappy, go ahead and resell it, then move on. Next time,
don't buy a guitar online that doesn't offer a return policy, but I guess you prolly already figured that out.
Perhaps Garrett (RKLad) or Greg Rich will check in here and offer another option.

Is there anything on the guitar, or was there anything in the price or advertising indicating that the guitar might be a factory second? I had one of those
that was very uninspiring and was sold ASAP.

There was no indication that it was a 2nd. I can't see anything bad on the guitar, in fact, it looks very nice.

What gauge and material are the D'Addario strings?
On a rosewood dread, I'd recommend medium phosphor bronze. By medium, I mean traditional medium of .013 to .056. I mention that because some brands call lights (.012-.054) mediums now. |

They are .012 to .053. I have used these on most guitars that I have with very good results.

Both Dave and Dave bring up good points. Poorly fitting saddles are tone killers! I've found that 90% of Pac Rim guitars have plastic shims under the
saddle. I'd also ditch the light strings for medium EJ-17's, that will drive the top better. How's the action (string height)?
If your adventures, loosen the strings, capo up the neck holding the strings, remove the bridge pins and strings, placing the ball ends in the sound hole . Mark the treble end of the saddle with a pencil or marker, then remove it buy lifting, it should be a slip fit. If you can't lift it out, chances are it's not seated against the bridge. Next, check the bottom of the saddle on a flat surface and look for daylight. If you can see daylight, it's not flat. If there's a plastic shim under the saddle, remove it. Medium gauge strings will take care of the loss of the shim thickness. Be sure to replace the saddle with the mark on the treble side. If you find the saddle is too tight, or not flat and your real adventures, contact me, I'll tell you how to fix it. Good luck Harry.

If they refuse to accept a return, leave them negative feedback and contact Recording King, and tell thim about your recently purchased "NEW" guitar and that it is a dud ,and you want another one in exchange. |

As I mentioned in a recent AGF thread I would find out exactly what year this guitar was made. The "heaviness" indicates to me that it might be an
older model and if this is the case, should have been substantially discounted as NOS.

I emailed Recording King through the "contact us" on the web site but I haven't heard back from them yet.

I suggested that Harry make a post here in the hope that Greg Rich might pick up on it.
Over at the AGF, I commented that all of the Carolina guitars I've owned have developed a lot more tone with age, but having said that, they certainly didn't sound bad to start with. I agree with Ryan that it would be helpful to establish when the guitar was made. Paul |

I got an email back from Recording King about the RD-27 that I bought from "Online Guitars" on Ebay. They don't know exactly when it was made by
the serial # 0010319. This was before they changed their serial number system. However, they say it is about 3yrs old. They also say that they don't know
what is wrong with the guitar and suggested to try a few things.
Here is the best news from them,,,,,IT IS A 2ND...I am not happy !!!! Yes, the reply from Recording King says it is a 2nd. I emailed Online Guitars about this and will see if they reply to me or not. I will let you know what I find out. |

I think I've heard similar stories about 2nds coming from Online Guitar in the past. If it was misrepresented to you by them, you should be able to put
some pressure on them to take it back.

I sent Online Guitars an email telling them what they will do to resolve this. I also sent them the email from Recording King ay their request. Shortly after,
I get another email from Recording King telling me that they are sorry for the mistake and that the RD-27 is NOT a 2nd. Makes you wonder who is talking to who.
Now this is making me look like a jerk. I guess at times it is just better to stay shutup about things. Its a no win situation.

A second???
That would likely explain why it sounds so bad. I have a
feeling almost all of those RK seconds didn't sound very good and that's why Daddy's Music online was (maybe still is) selling them at nearly half
price. Stick to your guns and get a refund or a NEW replacement, Harry. You should be entitled to one. Really sorry to hear that but at least you know what
you're dealing with now. Keep us posted! FWIW Online guitars sold me a Morgan Monroe Dread awhile back that seemed like it might have been a second. I
never got it looked at like I should have and never thought to PM Morgan Monroe the serial # to see if this was the case. I wouldn't buy from that guy
again. His prices might be lower than other places but his stock and sales techniques are questionable at best. You've just reinforced my original thoughts
on that..........

Never heard from Recording King or Online Guitars again. Best to stay away from that seller on eBay...

Thats to bad it worked out that way.. I had a bad experience with on line guitars on e bay a few years ago...I don't think what happened to you is anything new ..Back when I had trouble with them I got a refund but I would not go near that place again. If you buy on line there are some good dealers out there most have a real business store and offer full guitar services. There are very few dealers around me so I buy on line most of the time and have learned from my mistakes who you can trust..cibby
