I stopped at a music shop on the way home from work to get strings. I rarely go to this store, and even less often play the guitars in their acoustic room, as
they usually have little that I like. Tonight though I ventured in and played through a bunch, including some nice Yamahas. I've heard a lot about the
FG730S model and test drove several of those--shimmery, balanced, good clarity and bite, very nice. Great for the $. A Yamaha LL16 was nice as well, played
better but I preferred the sound of the FG730S.
Just before leaving I spotted a couple of fairly traditional looking Crafter guitars. I've never really liked or been too impressed by any of the Crafters I've come across before--mostly Taylor-like Grand Auditoriums and some nondescript Dreads that didn't do anything for me. These looked different so I gave them a whirl. They were two of the same model, actually: the DV200 NV. All solid, Engleman top, hog b/s with nicely shaped necks and 1 3/4" nuts, satin finish, and wonderful tone: lively and responsive, open, warm and woody with sound that jumped off the guitar. Very comfortable to play. I liked them a lot. Didn't sound like any Crafters I'd played before! (not that I've played a ton).
When I got home, I tried to research these models online but found very little info and no reviews. Anyone have any experience with them?
