Brian - thought I'd better get this new section going. When are you coming to Florida? We need to find a way to get together when you're down here. We could meet mid-state for the bluegrass doings. I can give you dates for the BG weekends.

It would have to be the first week of July or the last two weeks of December '07. Dorie is already booked for all but those dates. I know we're going someplace "warm" but where has yet to be determined.
We try to get to central america at least once a year. Believe it or not, it's actually a less expensive vacation than the states. We are always looking for places to semi-retire so we tend to have "working" vacations. The last few days haven't been too bad, thank goodness. No shoveling snow...yet. Dorie's car is still in the shop so I've had shuttle duty on top of everything else. What about you? And what's this going to work at 5 AM? I was thinking you were relaxing in your middle age down there in sunny F L A Doc I logged on this morning and there wasn't a post yet in this section. Just as I was fixin' to type my lovely bride said, "It's time to go". Dang, just missed number 1 by a few minutes. Brian |

It's 4:30 AM and I'm off to open the BP Station/convenience store I manage. I thought I'd take a part time job, and now I work a 10 hour day M-F. I do take the BR140 to work, though, or sometimes the mandolin. Not a lot of traffic this early in the morning.
I've heard Costa Rica is a nice retirement option, but I'm kinda partial to Mexico, particularly the Yucatan. Dave " Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get."

Quote: Yeah, I know what you mean. I thought I'd take a 40 hour a week job...that's considered part time at the factory where I work. We looked at Costa Rica this past February. Too expensive. You know you're in the wrong part of Central America when you start seeing Coldwell-Banker signs instead of "por vende" We haven't been to the Yucatan. Dorie and I both prefer the relative tranquility of the pacific side. A few years ago we looked at the Puerto Escondido area north of Huatulco (sp), in southern Mexico. It was still too touristy for us, but the infrastructure was in place. We're at the tail end of the baby boomers so the gray beards before us have already gotten the choice spots and driven the prices up. About the only thing left is non-coastal and areas with less than optimum governments and infrastructure. We're keeping an eye on what's happening in Nicaragua. |

Some areas of the Yucatan are quite unspoiled, and the Caribbean is just as tranquil in those parts. Nicaragua sounds interesting, but I'm leery of the political fragility of Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, etc.
If your plans bring you south in July, it's plenty hot hereabouts, but the 2nd weekend of every month is bluegrass jam in Arcadia (central south Florida). Keep that in mind while you're looking at dates. Dave " Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get."

Oh man....that ain't right.
If you're gonna tell it, tell it right now. It was Trader Joes "Wintry Blend". Medium roasted Sumatran and Guatemalan coffee beans spiked with zesty red and green peppercorns, whole fresh cloves and chunks of sweet cinnamon. "The light sprinkling of spices adds zing to an already extrordinary cup of coffee". Good stuff Maynard! |

Whole cloves and peppercorns? I don't like lumps in my coffee. That sounds more like dinner.

Dorie and I have been in Phoenix for the last 4 days arriving back home about an hour ago. Late Wednesday night our son-in-law was rushed to the emergency room. He had his first blood transfusion and hemodialysis about 1am Thursday morning. It's been non-stop with him since. Untreated hypertension (for years) led to complete renal failure among other things. He needs a transplant. His kidneys are useless. For now he is to have dialysis every 3 days with each session lasting between 3 and 4 hours. He's 22 years old.
If anyone reading this has on going high blood pressure TREAT IT! It's not something to f*#k around with. It's not called the Silent Killer for nothing. Ok I'm done, still a bit angry, but I'm done. On the bright side, our first grandbaby came early. Kaiya was born Thursday night at 10:21. Mom, Dad and baby are fine. Grandma and grandpa are exhausted. |

Sorry to hear about your son-in-law, Brian. It sounds like he has "malignant" hypertension, which is a horrible condition, almost always leading to kidney failure and transplantation. He's in my thoughts. Congrats on the granddaughter. My first grandchild Annie, now almost 8, is the apple of Grampa's eye. Get some rest.

Congratulations on the grandbaby man. My brother was right, he said you think your kids are precious just wait until you get a grandkid to go with the kids. Hey brian, I know it would be hard for me to do anything but if theres anything I do to help just let me know. PS. Post a pic of that grandbaby when you get a chance. |

Hey Dave,
Actually the weather on the mountain has been relatively nice. It has snowed twice in the last 10 days or so but the day time temps have been above 30 and the roads are clear and safe. I'm in Phoenix at the moment. We arrived last night, driving down after work. This is Dories last weekend off before she starts teaching her next 20 week course so we decided on a quick visit to the new grandbaby, Jared and then her folks in Tucson. I have to work Sunday so the weekend will go by too fast. I've had some contact (locally) regarding what we chatted about and on the surface it appears promising. Former colleagues are reaching out. Thanks again man. Brian |

Outstanding! Enjoy your weekend in civilization, or at least I think Phoenix is civilized. Never could quite figure out how camelbacks got there, though.
